Amazing original midcentury landscape oil painting by notable Canadian artist,
Mary Dorothy Seeley-Smith (1890-1970’s/80’s); signature in lower right corner, and also dated 1947
This piece is an original stretched oil on canvas and depicts an impressionistic rural landscape made up of an incredible sophisticated palette of heathered mid tones
Seeley-Smith was associated with the London Ontario art scene having first studied under local artists there before studying at The New York School of Art under Robert Henri and then in Paris from 1911-1914 studying under Madame LeFarge; she exhibited at the Spring Paris Salon in 1913
Seeley-Smith worked primarily in oil frequently exhibiting landscapes with a focus on Canadian landscapes, particularly known for winter scenes such as this one. In 1926 she was one of eight artists whose work formed the foundation for the city of London’s first municipal art collection.
