Born in Yorkshire England and then emigrated to Canada; Fairley was a minimalist in his aesthetic & stripped his subjects of pretense, moving from landscapes to portraiture as a matter of impulse. Consisting of flat areas using a deliberately limited colour palette, his works were intellectual distortions that exposed the character of his subjects.

He was a known advocate of The Group of Seven
